Understanding Non-Emergency Medical Transportation

How non-emergency rides differ from ambulance services, and what to confirm before arranging transport.

General educational information, not medical advice. Discuss individual health decisions with your treating clinician. Bjou service availability must be confirmed separately.

A ride, not an emergency response

Non-emergency medical transportation helps people reach appointments when ordinary transport does not meet their needs. It is not a substitute for an ambulance, emergency response or clinical monitoring. For medical emergencies, call 911.

Review the level of assistance

Some riders can walk with a cane or walker; others need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle. Discuss transfers, entrances, mobility aids and companion needs with the provider before booking.

Confirm the whole trip

Ask about the arrival window, return pickup, price and cancellation terms. Insurance coverage, service area and vehicle suitability must be confirmed rather than assumed.
