Home Care and Home Health: Understanding the Difference

Nonmedical daily support and skilled clinical services have different roles and requirements.

General educational information, not medical advice. Discuss individual health decisions with your treating clinician. Bjou service availability must be confirmed separately.

Nonmedical home care

Home care generally focuses on daily living, companionship and household support. Permitted tasks vary by location, service model and caregiver qualifications.

Skilled home health

Home health may involve licensed clinicians and a clinical care plan. Referral requirements, eligibility and coverage vary. Ask your treating clinician about the appropriate clinical services for your situation.

When both may be needed

Some people need help with everyday routines alongside clinical visits. These services should be coordinated without asking nonmedical caregivers to perform tasks outside their permitted scope.
